O Come, O Come Emmanuel is an ancient Latin hymn associated with the Vespers services leading up to Christmas. This 3-5 octave handbell arrangement by Mark Lewis imitates the tradition of Latin plainsong but is fully modern in conception. This arrangement is not too extreme in terms of notes and rhythms, however it incorporates some complex harmonies and will require some very creative part assignments. It uses the singing bell technique and incorporates handchimes as well.
The arrangement is very similar to the vocal trio arrangements of this piece published by Making Joyful Music with a pedal note drone that passes between singing bell and rung notes. There is an optional hand drum part.
While this arrangement does work as a standalone piece, we have also published string orchestra and woodwind ensemble settings that work wonderfully with this arrangement and/or as an accompaniment to the vocal setting. There is also a full orchestral arrangement.
