FlutePlaying the flute is like breathing to Blanche Marie Lewis - she's done it for so long that it is an integral part of her life. Flute was the first and only instrument that she tried as a youth, after taking the requisite piano lessons in elementary school. Playing piccolo in the marching band in high school was a blast!
Blanche Marie went on to study Flute Performance at Florida Southern College before pursuing a Master's degree in Music Therapy at Florida State University. She loves playing at weddings and special events and sharing beautiful music with people at important times in their lives. (And still thinks playing the piccolo is a blast!) In addition to performing on the traditional C flute, piccolo, alto and bass flute, Blanche Marie has continuously taught private flute lessons throughout her adult life since she was a college student. What is the appropriate age to begin flute lessons? There is not ONE magical age to start playing the flute, but there are some guidelines to consider. Most students start the flute at some point in their late elementary years. By this age, the potential flutist is physically large enough to hold a regular flute and have enough strength and lung capacity to make a sound. Sometimes younger students have a strong desire to start the flute. One recommendation would be to start on the Fife. A fife uses the same embouchure as a flute, but does not take as much air, and is smaller and lighter. As the student grows and becomes adept at breath control and fingering, it is an easy transition to the flute. On the other end of the spectrum, it's NEVER too late to take up the flute! Blanche Marie has had many success stories with adult flute students - from beginners to accomplished musicians.
